Pieve

The word for a rural parish church, pieve, is derived from the Latin ‘plebe’, meaning plebs, the common people, since it arose as a place where the people could meet. The pieve was important not only in religious terms, but for social and economic functions as well.

In Casentino such churches were built between the 9th and 13th centuries A.D.
